Artist Statement.

I created my business 'FacetNation Jewellery' in 2009, after graduating in 2007 from UCA Farnham in Surrey.

My designs are inspired by many things which interest me greatly in day to day life - namely victorian mourning jewellery & a love of lockets; the beauty of gemstones in their rough & polished forms; photography & mixed media; memories & momentoes - to name a few.

I am facsinated by lockets & other forms of jewellery which enable the wearer to encapsulate an item, or a memory, or momento; and this is something I am continually researching & exploring in my own designs.

Often my work spirals from one small idea, into a direction of its own, and turns into something very unique from the original thought.  I like to let my imagination wander until I have come up with an idea or a design that I am excited about turning into reality.  My design process is nearly 100% thought driven - with only a quick sketch of the idea for my reference, before making the piece.  I prefer not to dwell too much on design ideas by drawing them over & over, and rather start making them whilst the idea is fresh, and see how the piece evolves whilst making.  Sometimes a finished design idea will simply pop into my head, in whichcase I make a note of it immediately, incase it dissapears as quickly as it appeared!

'Amulet' is a series of pieces I am working closely on at the moment, which is an extension of a project I set myself whilst on my degree course.  It explores 'holding jewellery' - finding a way of capturing an object in something wearable.  I chose to capture gemstones, especially rough samples, as they are a passion of mine.  I often see far more beauty in an un-cut stone than a facetted piece, as you are seeing the unique shapes & formations that have been created by nature.  I decided to set them in resin, so that as much of the stone as possible remains visible whilst still being securely contained.
